My Must-Watch Anime List
Trigun - If you haven't seen this, I weep for you. Trigun is a frickin' classic, amazing steampunk anime. Big guns, good humour, and Legato is sexy as hell.
Dragon Ball/Z - Everyone has to suffer through it at least once. Vegeta is the best.
Vision of Escaflowne - Fantasy mecha anime. Young girl named Hitomi ends up in a land she has no knowledge of, kingdoms and dragons and political intrigue. Sort of steampunk, and my favourite seiyuu plays Van Fanel, one of the main characters. This right hereis my all-time favourite anime.
Hellsing - Both the original series and the OVA are top-notch. It's about a vampire who works for a vampire hunter organization (Hellsing). Action-packed and ultra-violent, guaranteed to keep you entertained.
Rurouni Kenshin OVA - The original series was complete crap, the OVA was mind-blowingly awesome. It's set in the Meiji era of Japan and follows a samurai named Kenshin. It's violent, dramatic, and beautifully animated. The end has me in tears every single time.
Serial Experiments Lain - Cyberpunk mindf***. This anime is deep and will keep you questioning it for years to come. Holds a strong message about the cyber age.
Mnemosyne - Whoa. I got this one on a whim, and was completely floored by how good it was. I'm not sure how I would classify it as it spans many centuries, and doesn't really stick to any one plotline. Nudity, violence, sex, past, future, angels... Weird, but in an incredible kind of way. Totally worth the watch.
Gundam (Any of its iterations) - Mecha anime, always carries a strong message about war regardless of what generation it's in. My personal favourites are Z Gundam, Turn-A-Gundam, Gundam SEED, and Gundam 00. Expect much teen angst, drama, and big ass mech battles. G Gundam is good for a laugh, make sure you're ripped beforehand.
Ghost Hound - Wow. I caught this one as it was airing (<3 fansubs), and it left me speechless. It involves, as you can imagine, ghosts. It follows a young man with a troubled past. Sort of a coming-of-age kind of thing, with a lot of mindf***ing. Loved it.
Toward the Terra - This is a remake of a movie from the 70s. It's about humanity in the future. After we destroyed the Earth with our greed and carelessness, we move into different colonies and are controlled my computers. Just... fantastic, that's all I can say. So, so fantastic. Dramatic, moving, and fantastic.
Ergo Proxy - I don't even know how to describe this. It's futuristic, it's violent, and it's pseudo-religious but don't let that turn you off from it. This anime is masterfully animated, with a strong story, and great voice acting for both the dub and original. Robots and clones = good times.
Samurai Champloo - It's funny, dramatic, and full of awesome samurai fights. Do it.
Claymore - Women with big effing swords killing demons. There's more to it than that, obviously, but even that alone is enough to make it awesome. Great fight scenes, drama is paced well, and while the ending left a lot to be desired for manga readers, those who haven't read the manga will feel it's been wrapped up well.
Death Note - It goes without saying. Eff Near, Yagami-sama for life!
Code Geass - It's like Death Note meets Gundam. I frickin' loved it. Lelouch is a total badass.
So yeah, there you go. More than enough to keep you occupied for a long time.
If there's an exception to every rule, is there an exception to that rule?

<3 Hellsing, I want to add one thing.
Bakemonogatari - I have no idea why I like it, it's weird that's probably why.

Good list, except I would have to add a couple:
Case Closed- Great anime, never finished the english dub but if you like mysteries its a must, every episode gives you a clue to the next mystery and it kind of plays with your mind on how these criminals pulled off the crime.
S-cry-Ed - Great action anime, the dub is really lacking because alot of the stuff didnt translate well, but the sub is great, dub can pass tho, its got great action.
Rounin Warriors- This is a great classic anime, it was drawn up before dragonball as you can see from the animation value, great show though.
Bleach- Um...its Bleach! Great anime with great subs AND dubs in my opinion. Johnny Yong Bosch fits Ichigo very well, great action and a different look on death.
Naruto- BELEIVE IT! Just kidding the dubbed version sucks, but the subbed is crazy good.
.hack// - This is a great anime, if you havent seen or heard of it watch it!! Its about a guy who gets stuck in a virtual reality video game, he finds that at one point he tries to log out and cant, so he fights through the MMORPG and tries to find a way out of it. They have 2 offbranches of the series, all good, second season not so great but .hack//ROOTS is also great
FLCL: FOOLIE COOLIE! This is arguably the funniest anime EVER! Watch it!
Fullmetal Alchemist - I cant freakin believe I left out this show. This is probably my favorite anime, great subs AND DUBS! Thats right I said it, GREAT DUBS! Its only like 56 episodes and a movie, though you dont have to watch the movie -_-. The original show did not follow the same story line as the manga (which is still ongoing while the show wrapped up) so they are releasing an entire new anime called Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood to follow close to the manga, the original anime is still AMAZING, WATCH IT!

I left Bleach and Naruto off since they're the "big name" anime of now. Most people have seen/heard about it.
Good call with .hack// though, totally slipped my mind.

True they are big in anime world, love them both though.
Yeah .hack// was when I first started watching anime, I watched that every night until the dumb people took it off and I watched it on the interweb =P. I played all the games too, though I realized that I paid 50 bucks for the 4 original .hack//sign games, so $200 there than another 150 for the .hack//G.U. series XD. oh well, great games.
OH and Annora, I watched that Mnemosyne show you were talking about, holy shit that show is crazy. First scene where that woman got shot while hanging from a building than her arm fell off behind her I was like O.O!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. I added 1 anime to my list, i cant beleive I forgot this one its like my all time favorite!

Haha, totally awesome right? I don't even know why I got it, maybe cause the name was intriguing, and then it was like "BAM! Violence!"

I'm sad to say I've never watched FMA, I keep meaning to.

See the thing is with .hack is which version are you talking about? I personally like .hack and .hack gu. Same also goes with Gundam big fan of Gundam Wing and Gundam G. but i am not sure about the other ones yet. Also what about fullmetal alchemist? I know this is more of a movie but what about Blood the last vampire the seriese isnt to bad.

O.O Annora you HAVE to watch FMA! The story is amazing, the animation is great and the action is awesome! Alchemy is the art of taking and object and forming it into a different object, but the items have to be there, like you cant make a building out of a pipe, you can make a sword or reshape the pipe and so on. Well 2 brothers named Ed and Al, they practice Alchemy and when their mom dies they try to use all the materials a human is made of to revive her. Well basically it all goes wrong, Al loses his body and Ed loses his leg and sacrifices his arm to put Al's soul in a suit of armor. Its funny and serious, alot like Trigun, and honestly I liked the Dub better than the sub, for once.
And Mga, I was referring to .hack//SIGN and .hack//ROOTS, both are amazing shows, not driven by action but by Mystery, good anime shows, and since we all play MMO's its a perfect show haha. and I said FMA in my list

5 Centimeters per Second (5cm/s):
A really good anime about two childhood friends, it touches on a lot of themes that are present in our regular lives especially if you've been or who have tried to be in a relationship. The animation is very well done and voice acting is well done as well.
