Ares - ANIME MUST WATCH LIST - MANGA THAT NEEDS TO BE READ!
Starting off more or less randomly, those that've sticked coming first.
Cowboy Bepop
It's a classic, and EVERYONE that are into anime just HAVE to watch it.
Cant really compare it with anything as it's unique, with a lovely story and characters to fall in love with.
Plot:
Enter a world in the distant future, where Bounty Hunters roam the solar system. Spike and Jet, bounty hunting partners, set out on journeys in an ever struggling effort to win bounty rewards (money) to survive.
While traveling, they meet up with other very interesting people. Could Faye, the beautiful and ridiculously poor gambler, Edward, the computer genius, and Ein, the engineered dog be a good addition to the group?
Hunter X Hunter
For those of you who's gotten hooked on watching Naruto, Bleach or One Piece. If you haven't already you really gotta check out HxH. Not many anime series can pride themselves with just about zero fillers, and arc upon arc with a great story. The characters are not all good, or all bad in HxH, but the show will definitely leave you with a feelgood feeling in your tummy. This is another MUST watch.
Plot:
A Hunter is one who travels the world doing all sorts of dangerous tasks. From capturing criminals to searching deep within uncharted lands for any lost treasures. Gon is a young boy whose father disappeared long ago, being a Hunter. He believes if he could also follow his father's path, he could one day reunite with him.
After becoming 12, Gon leaves his home and takes on the task of entering the Hunter exam, notorious for its low success rate and high probability of death to become an official Hunter. He befriends the revenge-driven Kurapica, the doctor-to-be Leorio and the rebellious ex-assassin Killua in the exam, with their friendship prevailing throughout the many trials and threats they come upon taking on the dangerous career of a Hunter. Based on the manga by Togashi Yoshihiro.
GunGrave
Many people tend to give up on anime because they feel it's too happy, or to much joy. This is true to some extent, most of the stuff that is out there on the web, subbed or dubbed is "feelgood". But if you look hard enough you'll find more than enough bloody, disturbing, crazy, awesome gunfights WITH a good story to back everything up. That is what you'll find in GunGrave. This is one of the best series i've ever seen. I cried, more than once. It's just that good.
Plot:
After a tragic scene with the murder of his friends, Brandon Heat follows his only friend Harry McDowel into Millennion, the largest mafia syndicate. While Harry McDowel is striving for power, Brandon is only staying in Millennion to see the girl he loves whose custody was gained by the leader of Millennion, Big Daddy. But as the years pass and Brandon proves loyal to Millennion, Brandon learns the true purpose and passion of Millennion, and that's when true conflict arises.
Angel Heart
If you've read the manga too City Hunter, or seen the anime you'll know who Ryo Saeba is! and you'll know he's fuckin' awesome! This show has a total of 50 episodes, and takes place after City Hunter. City Hunter is about a couple hundred episodes, but dont mind that. Angel Heart is a GREAT anime to watch, even if you dont have the entire backstory as it'll be covered in flashbacks and such and bring you up to speed about whats going on!
Plot:
A young Taiwanese assassin codenamed "Glass Heart" committed suicide by jumping off a building, and her heart was pierced by metal fence. Miraculously, her life was saved by heart transplantation. During her recovery she began to experience strange dreams, which lead her to Japan looking for the donor of her heart, who happens to be Kaori Makimura, former partner of City Hunter Ryo Saeba.
Air Gear
Well, it's a good show. So font condemn it just because it has some ecchi in it. Just think of it as fanservice. Anyway to the point. Imagine having rollerblades, with engines that lets you move around mid-air? Now think of having underground races with different objectives fighting over territory in a gang?! You'll be following Minami Itsuki's introduction to the Air Treck world, and strap up it's an awesome ride.
Plot:
Minami Itsuki never thought about seriously riding Air Treck motorized roller blades, until he got his butt handed to him by a street gang of Storm Riders. That day, he discovered in a locked up room, a pair of AT's and a box of stickers belonging to the Sleeping Forest street gang. One thing leads to another, and Ikki dons the wheels and begins to ride. As his reputation builds in the AT street fighting/racing world, he begins to develop his own gang and participate in more fights, gaining more and more territory.
Baccano!
First person that comes to mind when you hear mafia? Ok. Ok. The Godfather.. Second person? Michael Corleone.. Meh.. Start thinking more Al Capone, the 1930s, Chicago... Time of the steam train, and the tommygun. Baccano, Baccano, Baccano!! It just rolls on your tongue like laffytaffy. You'll be thrown into different peoples point of view, and perspectives as the story unveils, the deeper you get the more sense it all makes. Drawing on the end you'll come to realize what you just watched was EPIC. WATCH IT. NUW.
Plot:
During the late 1930s in Chicago, the transcontinental train, Flying Pussyfoot, is starting its legendary journey that will leave a trail of blood all over the country. At the same time in New York, the ambitious scientist Szilard and his unwilling aide Ennis, are looking for missing bottles of the immortality elixir. In addition, a war between the mafia groups is getting worse. On board the Advena Avis, in 1711, alchemists are about to learn the price of immortality.
Based on the award winning light novels of the same name, this anime adaptation follows several events that initially seem unrelated, both in time and place, but are part of a much bigger story - one of alchemy, survival and immortality. Merging these events together are the kindhearted would-be thieves, Isaac and Miria, connecting various people, all of them with their own hidden ambitions and agendas, and creating lifelong bonds and consequences for everyone involved.
Black Cat
The world, is ONE big conspiracy. >.> <.<. If you think it is, it probably is. Not much to say about this anime, it's good. The style is quite typical for 2005 - a bit happylooking, but the story is good. It's not a must watch, but definently something you should pick up if you have the time on your hands.
Plot:
Train Heartnet is the infamous gunman 'Black Cat', a cold-blooded assassin who works for the organization known as 'Chronos', bearing the mark XIII on his body. Most of his life was surrounded by violence, so Train is quiet, asocial and uncaring. However his life changes as he encounters the mysterious Sweeper (bounty hunter), Saya. Her unique way of living interested Train but tragedy occurs, resulting in Train changing the way he has lived towards the life of a Sweeper with newfound friends Sven and Eve.
Black Lagoon
Imagine your this guy, waking up at 5, working to 7 - than having to entertain your colleagues and superiors and on top of that being the guy everyone kicks around? Not very much fun. However! One day you get lucky and your company sends you to warmweather and sunny beaches to deliver a disc for them. BABOOM, your kidnapped and your on the road to the fastlife, or a brief one. This is a MUST watch. Contains fast paced action, great character development and a very awesome animation style.
Plot:
Okajima Rokuro is a Japanese businessman in a town full of Japanese businessmen. His normal day consists of social drinking with clients and being kicked around by his bosses. He finally gets a break though, as he's sent by his company to the tropical seas of Eastern China to deliver a disc. But his boat gets hijacked by a band of mercenaries hired to retrieve the disc. Rock (as he is newly dubbed by his captors) catches the interest of the only female merc Revy as she thinks he's worth a ransom, taking him hostage. However, the disc that was stolen has a terrible secret that's unknown to Rock, which causes massive confusion and chaos for both him and his kidnappers.
Bus Gamer
It's only 4 episodes, so I do suggest picking up the manga if you enjoy the anime. The story is just awesome. Three strangers, the possibility to obtain more money than they could dream of! Check it out!
Plot:
When three complete strangers, Mishiba Toki, Nakajyo Nobuto and Saitoh Kazuo, are hired by a corporation to compete in the Bus Game, an illegal dog-fight conducted in strict secrecy, they are given the team code of "Team AAA" (Triple Anonymous). This group of three who differ entirely from their living environments to their personalities have to work together effectively, but without mutually wiping out their mistrust of each other or prying into each other's privacy. They only have one point in common - each of them need a large amount of money for their individual circumstances. To get the money, they must play in the game despite their very own lives being at stake.
Bokura Ga Ita
This is anime depicts how dysfunctional, screwed up people really are. It feels genuine and real, it's sad, loving, funny and to times aggravating how two people cant communicate what they feel, want and need. Check it out if your in the mood for something a bit out of the ordinary.
Plot:
Nanami Takahashi welcomes the start of her high school life with great expectations of making as many friends as possible. There is much talk among the girls about a popular boy, Motoharu Yano, who has 2/3 of the girls in his middle school liking him. When Nanami asks Yuri Yamamoto, the girl sitting next to her, about Yano, the latter curtly replies that she dislikes him. Nanami is clueless of who Yano is until the day of the class nomination when she made a fool of herself by calling the name of her new friend wrongly. It turns out that she has actually met Yano along the corridors (unaware of his true identity) and he tricked her by providing a random name, resulting in the embarrassing incident in class. Nanami was initially mad at Yano but after a few encounters with him, she begins to find herself liking him.

I love gungrave. I really need to buckle down and watch the entire series subtitled, since I only watched the official dub on the TechTv anime block back in the day.

Yeah I've been looking for some good anime too catch up on, bleach just doesn't do it for me anymore, and in regards to a good one with a romantic touch I would definitely have to go with Rurouni Kenshin

Here's a list for ya, I'd recommend anything rated 7 and above. But seeing as I enjoy action over drama and romance, you won't find many of those on there.

If you want a pretty awesome anime, watch Fate Stay Night
the most epic battle I've seen of any anime is in it. watch this video if you don't mind spoilers for the anime. start watching 2:00 if you want straight into the cool part.
