Well they did develop the first Planetside game. Doesn't that count? :P Honestly, I think Planetside was the only thing that Sony ever got right. But given SOE's recent history I'd be surprised if they can actually publish PS2 before it becomes vaporware. But here's to hoping they can get it finished and working like an actual god damned sequel and avoid messing it up on a massive scale.

Here are my thoughts on the vaporware front...
They are using the same engine in PS2 as they are in Everquest Next, so the engine is gonna have all sorts of R&D money thrown at it. PS may be the red headed stepchild, but having them so closely linked will mean that even if there isn't a ton of development headed to PS2, there will at least be work happening on the engine which could have benefit to PS as a game. Everquest is SOE's prize project, so they're not gonna be cutting much funding for that one.
My favourite rumour at the moment is that there was a hint of cross platform play between PC and Playstation.
My favourite confirmed feature is the resource harvesting aspect of Planetside Next, where territory control is more meaningful and allows for customization and upgrading your gear.
I think that their new capture style will really appease many of the people who were frustrated with the lattice aspect of the first, now you get a capture speed bonus relative to how much nearby territory is under your control. Backhacking is still possible but it takes forever, versus attacking an area you have surrounded, which takes very little time.

Ctc!!
So there I was, spitting on a fish trying to keep it alive.
People can say what they want about Sony, Planetside was AWESOME! I agree with Saerix in that Sony did wonders with Planetside and accomplished things that no one else have even attempted. The new graphics look nice but I am not sure about this new resource mechanic. Only time will tell. I need a lot more information before I will become totally committed.
