How far is too far?

Now Im 28 years old, I’ve played games for as long as I can remember (Commodore 64 Eagles Nest anybody?) but thats besides the point. Never in a million years or at least back then would I have imagined being part of “guilds” that have 50+ people in them simultaneously playing and working towards killing the latest greatest boss for that cool loot! Yes that dreaded word “raiding” came into play. I can’t say I’m un-happy with the way gaming has evolved over the last 15 years, I like the competitive aspect of how people want to play. It truly motivates me to get better or at the very least be as competitive as the next guy.

CTC in open beta Global Agenda

With the way the gaming industry blew up and most importantly the MMORPG aspect of it exploded and hit the scene running you will naturally have all sorts of different guilds, clans or gaming communities popping up all over the place. Each one pointing out why they’re better then the next group of players. I can’t necessarily blame people or guild leaders for wanting to stand out from the crowd, but on the same note how far is too far when trying to show people that you’re better then the next group?

For example, Cybernetic Punks played Global Agenda, we had players in alpha as well as closed beta for 7-months.  The game officialy went retail February 1st 2010, it was no secret to ANYBODY that was involved in the closed beta and alpha that GA was nowhere close to ready for retail, top that off with many of the things that were promised as well as publicly advertised by HiRez studios that never saw the light of day and more than likely never will, 30 days prior to the retail of the game they finally let us get a taste of the much anticipated AvA which finally gave all the eagerly awaiting “agencies” the chance to finally clash. We made alliances and broke alliances, but without question we kicked ass, as we were the leaders of the biggest alliance called CTC, our nemesis was the alliance called BHS headed by the agency www.ePeenery.com (Who later became the official first season winners of AvA after retail)

During that 30 days it became quite obvious that AvA for HiRez was something that they had NOT spent a lot of time refining, and if it wasn’t already apparent to the new people just playing the beta it was now, it became even more glaring for all of us that had been in closed beta and alpha.

I can go on and on about this but the bottom line is one thing lead to another and after retail launch of Global Agenda, Cybernetic Punks ceased to exist roughly within 2-3 weeks.

Why you ask?

  • Drastic drop in members wanting to play the game at all after the open beta, that was alliance wide for us.
  • One of our alliance agencies peaced out and joined another alliance. (Probably one of the best things about GA)
  • The game never changed in 7-months of playing it.

Ok, back to my point, accomplishments in a closed beta or open beta game worthy enough to list on my website as some achievement? Honestly, if I felt it was then I’d put it up, the fact of the matter is that it isn’t.

So based on that understanding, is it ok for all these different guilds to claim accomplishments that cannot ever even be proven? What about the guilds that actually accomplished those “achievements” and have proof? Don’t you as a guild leader feel like you are deceiving the very people you want to stand by you and be loyal? It’s funny to see people fight so furiously in defense of stuff that realistically can never be proved. My bottom line is this, don’t list achievements on your website unless they’re truly worthy enough to be touted by the developer of the game or some other news source, you’re only putting the very guild you worked so hard to create and keep together over the years as a laughing stock amongst the rest.

    Good read.
Everyone was a bit burned out after 7 months of beta. That wouldn’t have been a problem if there was actual content.

It would be cool if we could’ve had an article on how we won the first season of AvA tho xD

I think that is worthy of note. The legacy portion is where you lose out because who is going to remember what happened in beta of any game.

Perhaps in other games that would be acceptable but in a game like GA that may not even be around in 6 months… it will probably not matter.

However, for a guild, I think its worth putting a banner and letting us wave it around. Its a noteworthy accomplishment and something to say “hey we did that…”

Its just hit and miss though. I just don’t think people should be putting up corn-ball achievements it does more harm then good for the guild.
