Bungie's Official Ranked Resource Drop
Bungie just released their comprehensive ranked mode guide, breaking down Marathon's unique Holotag system for new Runners. Unlike traditional extraction shooters, Marathon ranked revolves around score targets rather than simple survival.
How Holotags Set Your Extraction Target
Every Holotag you carry increases your required extraction score. Bronze tags need 1,000 points, Silver requires 2,500, Gold demands 5,000, and Diamond pushes you to 7,500. The higher your tag tier, the more loot you need before you can extract — but also the bigger your rank point gains.
Death Penalties Hit Different
Dying in ranked means double punishment: you lose all carried gear AND take rank point penalties. This makes shell selection crucial. Thief and Assassin excel at hitting score targets quickly and extracting clean, while Destroyer and Triage work better for squads willing to fight for high-value loot.
Shell Tier Rankings for Holotag Success
Thief dominates solo ranked (S-tier) with Light Carry passive reducing loot movement penalties and Thief Drone enabling safe Holotag theft from downed enemies. Destroyer pairs with Triage for squad ranked dominance — Force Slam drops Holotags from enemies, while Triage keeps the team alive during extended looting phases.
Early vs Late Extraction Timing
Bronze and Silver Holotag carriers should prioritize quick extractions over risky high-value areas. Gold and Diamond tags need to commit to contested zones but should identify backup extraction points before engaging. The risk-reward calculation changes dramatically as your Holotag tier climbs.
Ranked isn't just about gunplay — it's about understanding when your score target justifies the risk of staying in raid.
