Core Upgrades First
With Marathon's ranked system punishing every death with gear loss and rank penalties, your upgrade priority determines survival consistency. Start with core components that affect every engagement.
Shields Are Non-Negotiable
Reactive Shield or Fortress Shield should be your first Purple investment. In ranked, the difference between surviving a third-party with 15 HP versus dying to chip damage is the difference between climbing and dropping tiers. Fortress Shield's HP regen makes extended fights winnable for Destroyer and Vandal players pushing Holotag carriers.
Weapon Mods by Shell Role
For Thief and Assassin extraction specialists: Precision Barrel and Fast Magazine on your primary. You need consistent damage to secure Holotag kills quickly, then fast reloads during escapes. Extended Magazine wastes precious mod slots when you should be repositioning.
For Destroyer and Triage squad players: Drum Magazine and Weighted Grip on LMGs like Conquest or Retaliator. Ranked squad fights last longerβyou need sustained fire without reloads breaking your pressure.
Optics Scale With Rank
Iron sights work in Bronze-Silver where positioning is loose. Gold+ requires Scout Scope (2x) minimum for holding long sightlines and spotting Holotag carriers before they spot you. Long Eye Scope (4x) becomes mandatory at Platinum when teams control map zones professionally.
Implants Last
Implants provide percentage bonuses to stats you've already upgraded. A 15% reload speed implant on a base-tier Fast Magazine gives minimal benefit compared to upgrading to Tactical Reload Mag first.
The 80/20 Rule
80% of your ranked consistency comes from shield + weapon mods. Save implant farming until your core loadout stops you from winning fights you should win.
